Mumbai, The weather took a sudden turn and within no time a strong dust storm and rain wreaked havoc in Mumbai. In Ghatkopar East, a heavy hoarding fell on a nearby petrol pump, trapping around 88 people under it. 74 were rescued. The rescue work continued till Tuesday morning.
NDRF said that 14 of the injured died. The remaining injured are undergoing treatment at Rajawadi in Ghatkopar and Trauma Care Center in Jogeshwari. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who reached the spot, ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident. Mumbai Police Commissioner has also been asked to take action against illegal hoardings in Mumbai.

BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani said that this accident happened in front of the petrol pump in Chheda Nagar of Ghatkopar East, where the hoardings fell on the side of the pump due to strong wind. A large number of people were buried under. Apart from the fire brigade, NDRF team also reached the spot for rescue. The hoarding that fell on the petrol pump was illegal. Its permission was not taken from BMC. Let us tell you that BMC had given instructions to remove the hoardings in the morning of 13th May i.e. the day of the accident. Even before this, notices had been issued several times.

BMC Commissioner said that under the Disaster Act, a criminal case will be registered against the company putting up the hoardings and the permission granting authority. Points had failed at Thane station of Central Railway during morning peak hours. Movement of trains on the mainline was affected for about an hour. Even before it was time to return home from office in the evening, unseasonal dust storm and rain hit Mumbai. Due to this, trains stopped on all three railway lines.
