Manipur. Violence has escalated again in Manipur and protests continue in different parts of the state. The Manipur government has shut down internet services across the state for five days in view of the increasing tension and student protests. According to a notification issued by the Home Department, the internet shutdown will continue till September 15.
Hundreds of students, who have been camping at Khwairamband Mahila Bazar in Manipur since Monday, tried to march towards the Raj Bhavan along BT Road on Tuesday but were stopped by security forces near the Congress Bhawan. Tear gas shells were fired during clashes between students and women protesters who were trying to march towards the Raj Bhavan demanding the removal of the DGP and the Manipur government’s security advisor, officials said.
Students of Manipur University also took out a protest rally and burnt an effigy of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The Manipur government has imposed curfew in Imphal East and West districts and prohibitory orders under Section 163 (2) of the BNSS in Thoubal in view of the students’ protest.
While the orders state that the movement of persons related to essential services like health, public health engineering department, municipal officials, electricity (MSPCL/MSPDCL), petrol pumps, functioning of courts, movement of flight passengers and media is prohibited, the police are urging the students to return to their homes. The students locked themselves on the first floor of the market, which was closed on Tuesday too due to the re-imposition of curfew.
