Sudan announced Thursday that it had notified the United Nations of declaring Volker Peretz, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the organization and head of the United Nations Integrated Transitional Support Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS), persona non grata.
The commander of the Sudanese army, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, had earlier expressed his rejection of the envoy, whose mission ended on the third of June.
In a letter addressed to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, last May, he said that Peretz “has become a source of negative repercussions towards the United Nations.”
He also accused him of “practicing misleading” in his reports by saying that there was a consensus on the framework agreement, and that “without signs of encouragement from several parties, including Peretz,” the commander of the Rapid Support Forces, Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo, “would not have rebelled.”
He added, “What Volker Peretz spent at the head of the mission does not help implement the mandate of UNITAMS (the United Nations Integrated Transitional Support Mission in Sudan) in a way that contributes to a successful transition process.”
It is noteworthy that Peretz was appointed as a special representative for Sudan and head of the United Nations Integrated Transitional Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) on January 7, 2021. His mission ended on the third of June.
