Referendums in the republics of Donbass, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions cause a “nervous, hysterical” reaction in the European Union and in the states that are members of NATO. This was reported on September 23 by the press bureau of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) of Russia.
“According to the information received by the Foreign Intelligence Service, the referendums that began on September 23 <…> cause an extremely nervous, in fact, hysterical reaction in the countries of NATO and the European Union,” the director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, Sergey Naryshkin, said.
The Foreign Intelligence Service noted that the position of the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, regarding voting in the liberated territories reflects the deep fear of the West, where power is held by a narrow group of people, bypassing democratic procedures.
“However, in doing so, Borrell betrayed the true attitude of the Western ruling class towards democracy: he hates the will of the people. After all, it is referendums that are one of the fundamental instruments of real democracy, which is not controlled by the oligarchy and corrupt political technologists, ”the Foreign Intelligence Service emphasized.
The press bureau called the public dissatisfaction with the incompetence and diktat of the European bureaucracy in Europe not surprising.
It is noted that the rejection of referendums by European bureaucrats is not the first time. Thus, the West reacted negatively to the plebiscite on the self-determination of Catalonia in 2017, and now they are trying to prevent the Scottish authorities from organizing a second referendum on the independence of the region. Thus, the West discredits the concept and meaning of democracy, the SVR concluded.
Referendums on the issue of joining as subjects of the Russian Federation started earlier that day in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DNR and LNR), in the Kherson region and in the liberated territories of the Zaporozhye region. Voting ends September 27th.
The All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center reported on September 23 that 97% of the residents of the DPR and LPR who plan to vote are in favor of joining the republics to the Russian Federation, in the Zaporozhye region – 87% of voters, in the Kherson region – 89%.
On September 20, the authorities of the republics of Donbass, as well as the liberated territories of the regions, decided to hold a referendum. On September 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed that the Russian Federation supports such a decision.
The next day, Borrell said that the EU plans to introduce new sanctions against Russia as soon as possible because of the referendums.
Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin said on September 23 that Russia is aware of its own decisions and should not be scared, he also added that the residents of Donbass and regions have the right to self-determination, which is enshrined in the UN Charter.
The special operation to protect Donbass, the beginning of which the Russian leader announced on February 24, continues. The decision to hold it was made against the backdrop of an aggravation of the situation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military, in connection with which the authorities of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics turned to Moscow for help.
