Tata Sons already has an 83.67 per cent stake in AirAsia India. The move is to merge the relatively small airline with Air India after acquiring the entire stake. Malaysia’s AirAsia Airlines, which flew nine years ago in the skies of India with high hopes, will leave the country with this. Air Asia owns 16.33% of the Indian unit. This will be Tata’s acquisition. The shares can be acquired directly or through an affiliate under a shareholder agreement between the company and Tata Sons.
As Air India is now an affiliate of the Tata Group, it will be possible to buy shares in Air Asia. It is clear from Tata’s application to the Competition Commission of India (CCI) that this is Tata’s first move to merge the airline’s businesses, including Vistara and AirAsia India, which works with Air Asia in Malaysia. In the application, Tata states that the mergers and acquisitions will not affect operations in any way. At the same time, Tata’s representation in the region will increase. With the launch of Air Asia India, Tata Motors will be able to offer cheaper services. Acquisitions will increase the value of Tata. The stock market is also likely to see big gains.
