What is The Great Combo of Puerto Rico?

The group was born as a result of the dissolution of Rafael Cortijo y su Combo in 1962, of which Rafael Ithier was a member. Some of the members of the disintegrated group met to record an album together with the Dominican singer Joseíto Mateo under the Gema Records record label.
This effort culminated in the release of the album ‘Menéame los mangos’. The name El Gran Combo was devised by businessman Guillermo Álvarez Guedes. Founding members included Joseíto Mateo, Rafael Ithier, Eddie Pérez, Héctor Santos, Rogelio ‘Kito’ Vélez, Víctor Pérez, Martín Quiñones, Miguel Cruz, Milton Correa and Roberto Roena.
El Gran Combo is known for a vast number of hits that have left a mark in the history of salsa. Among his most popular songs are ‘Ámame’, ‘Brujería’, ‘Falsaría’, ‘A summer in New York’, ‘Elimination of ugly’, ‘White sheets’, ‘Raindrops’, ‘Death’, ‘ ‘It’s gone’, ‘Azuquita pa’l café’, ‘Pilito’s party’, ‘The menu’, ‘There’s no bed for so many people’, ‘I freed myself’, ‘To the queen’, ‘The tennis shoes’ , ‘Julia’, ‘Chinese eyes’ and ‘And I don’t do anything else”, among many others.
The legacy of El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico consists of the fact that it continues to be a reference in the world of Latin music, with a career that spans several decades and is still in force thanks to its unmistakable style and its ability to adapt to changes in the music industry.
