Serbian Novak Djokovic won his first Olympic tennis gold medal in his career, defeating Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in a close match 7-6 (7-3) and 7-6 (7-2) at Roland Garros in the Paris 2024 Games.
The 37-year-old Serbian, ranked first in the tournament, became the fifth player to win the “Golden Slam”, adding the yellow metal in his fifth Olympic participation to his record of 24 Grand Slam titles.
Djokovic joined a closed club of players that includes Americans Andre Agassi and Serena Williams, Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who participated in this edition and was eliminated in the singles and doubles categories, and German Steffi Graf, who won the four Grand Slam titles and the Olympic gold.
The Serb also became the oldest player to win the singles title since the competition was reintroduced to the Olympic Games in 1988.
The player avenged his loss to Alcaraz himself in the Wimbledon final on British grass last month, on the latter’s way to winning his second consecutive Grand Slam title after the French Open, and the fourth in his career at the age of 21.
Djokovic celebrated the win by raising the Serbian flag high on the court, before going up to the players’ box to hug his wife and children.
