The tragedy that killed 38 people in the collapse took place in the African country of Sudan. Government sources said the accident happened about 500 km from the Sudanese capital Khartoum. The Sudanese Mining Department said the accident happened at the Um Darsaya gold mine near the town of El Nuhud in the western Kordofan province of South Sudan. At least 38 people were killed and at least eight were injured in what became known as the Cold War. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of 38 lives of Um Darsaya gold miners and extend our deepest condolences to their families,” a statement from the General Manager of the Mineral Resources Company said in a statement. The Sudanese government stopped mining at the mine years ago. Decided to close due to unfavorable conditions for mining. However, locals often visit the mine for gold mining. But, the Sudanese government is not taking minimum security measures to prevent the mines from collapsing. This has led to frequent incidents in Sudan. An official said four people were killed in an accident at a similar mine in January this year. Sudan is the poorest country in the world .. one of the gold extraction countries in Africa. In 2020, the country extracted 36.6 tonnes of gold. Nearly 2 million workers are employed in the mines, including Sudan’s Red Sea, Nahar al – Neil, southern Cordofan, and western Cordofan. About 75% of all conventional mining is gold.
