- Vijayasai Reddy’s letter to Prime Minister Modi
MP Vijayasai Reddy wrote a letter to the Prime Minister expressing doubts about the nature of the accident, relief measures and the investigation of the officers. The Hirakud Express derailed at 23.30 pm on January 21, 2017 at Kuneru railway station yard in Vijayanagar district. He said 42 people were killed and up to 70 were injured in the accident. Vijayasai Reddy alleged that the DRM had misled the then Union Minister Ashok Gajapatiraju at the instigation of the NIA. The commissioner said Ashok had also affected railway safety.
Vijayasai alleged that North Walther Division officials, DRM and state government investigative agency CBCID officials were involved in influencing the NIA investigation. He mentioned in the letter the key details of the Hirakud Express accident. He said the accident was attributed to the Naxalites. He said that the train derailed as soon as the Naxalites destroyed the railway track. However, Vijayasai said the Odisha DGP and Raigad SP had made it clear that the Naxalites were not involved in the incident. The place where the accident took place is under the supervision of the Railway Operations Team. The Naxalites are said to be unlikely to get there.
Vijayasai said the forensic lab had also clarified that there was no evidence of Naxalite involvement. He alleged that Ashok Gajapati Raju had influenced the Railway Safety Commissioner’s inquiry. He explained that four years after the accident, the NIA had not taken any action in the case. In the letter, Vijayasai said that the poor of AP and Odisha lost their lives in the accident and asked for peace for their souls. He wrote a letter to the Prime Minister asking him to immediately appoint a high level committee to conduct a comprehensive inquiry and punish the culprits severely.
