Arab and international reactions continued to welcome the resumption of relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, said that the agreement between Saudi Arabia and Iran to resume diplomatic relations may contribute to achieving regional stability.
Aboul Gheit added, through his Twitter account today, Saturday, that “the agreement ends the state of tension between the two countries that lasted for more than seven years, and it is a step that could mark a new positive phase in bilateral relations that may be useful in contributing to achieving a degree of regional stability.”
The Secretary-General of the Arab League also praised the efforts made by China, Iraq and the Sultanate of Oman, which helped reach this agreement.
Earlier, the European Union welcomed the agreement, expressing its aspiration to implement it. The European Union said in a statement that, given the major role that Saudi Arabia and Iran play in the region’s security, the resumption of relations between the two countries could contribute to the stability of the region as a whole.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said that Moscow congratulates “friends” in Iran, Saudi Arabia and China for reaching an agreement to restore relations.
Bogdanov added that Russia has contributed to the political process and dialogue between Riyadh and Tehran, along with other countries such as the Sultanate of Oman and Iraq.
The return of relations is also in line with the Russian initiatives aimed at establishing a security system in the Gulf region, which is of exceptional importance on the global economic level.
Yesterday, Riyadh and Tehran announced that they had reached an agreement to resume diplomatic relations and reopen their embassies and representations within a maximum period of two months, in a step that was welcomed by the Arabs and the international community.
