Dina Páucar, with more than 30 years of artistic career, has established herself as one of the greatest exponents of folk music in Peru. Her concerts, both locally and internationally, are usually packed, while her music videos are trending in social networks accumulating millions of views.
Now 55 years old, the singer has expressed on several occasions her deep love for music and her artistic career. However, few know that her destiny initially seemed to be far from the stage.
The singer, also known as the ‘Beautiful Goddess of Love’, had planned to pursue a completely different profession than music. However, an unfortunate experience in the final stage of her technical studies led her to venture into music, marking the beginning of her successful career.

Dina Páucar revealed that she initially chose cosmetology as her professional career. However, fate played a trick on her, preventing her from obtaining her certificate. The singer indicated that she was the victim of an assault on the day of her final exam, which prevented her from completing her studies and obtaining the technical degree. This event, which marked an unexpected turn in her life, was recounted by the artist in an interview with The Republic.
“I had studied a small technical course: Cosmetology. Now I apply it, I do my own hair and makeup. At that time, I was going to take my exam, but they stole everything I had to present that day, they took a whole briefcase full of things (tools). We had to take an exam on hair cutting, hairstyles, among others. I arrived at the academy with nothing, but they didn’t let me, I left very sad,” she commented.

The so-called ‘beautiful goddess of love’ had no idea at the time that this decision would lead her to become one of the most prominent singers of Peruvian folklore. What followed, as they say, is history.
“Because of that (referring to the robbery), I couldn’t get my certificate of what I had studied for three years. I suddenly dedicated myself to a musical career. I said: ‘If this (Cosmetology) isn’t for me, here (music) has to be for me,'” she said with a smile.

Why was Dina Páucar sentenced to prison?
Throughout her career as a singer, Dina Páucar has faced several legal controversies related to copyright. One of the most notorious cases occurred when she was accused of appropriating a composition by Thelma Balcázar, which led the 55th Criminal Court of Lima to sentence her to three years of suspended prison for violation of intellectual rights.
This was not the only conflict of this kind in her career. In 2000, the composer Ubaldo Apaza sued her for the unauthorized use of his song ‘Qué lindos son tus ojos’. Later, in 2012, Francisco Palacios also accused her of distributing his song ‘Ya no seré tu pañuelito’ without his consent. These situations marked difficult moments in the singer’s career, despite her success in vernacular music.

Killay is the stage name of the singer daughter of Dina Páucar and her husband Rubén Sánchez Gregorio. In Quechua, it means ‘My Moon’.
