Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank Sergei Belov told Izvestia that the department is discussing the issue of resuming the issuance of a five-ruble bill.
He explained that the Central Bank intends to resume printing ten-ruble bills.
“We are also discussing the issue of resuming the printing of five-ruble banknotes, which stopped ordering from Goznak after 1998. These banknotes are still in circulation, but they are extremely rare,” Belov said.
As the deputy chairman of the Central Bank clarified, the printing of a five-ruble bill may begin at the end of the year, if such a decision is made. It will probably be updated, but this will already be decided when developing the “Guidelines for the Development of Cash Circulation for 2026–2030,” Belov said.
Experts interviewed by Izvestia believe that the return of low denomination banknotes to active circulation will contribute not only to savings in the production of money, but also to solving the problem with home “warehouses” of coins.
According to psychologist Olga Maksimova, people, in principle, are more respectful of paper money, which is not associated with a trifle. In addition, metal money takes up a lot of space.
