Most of the basic materials in the Kingdom are still witnessing a dramatic increase, which contributed to the decline in the Moroccan household confidence index, to which some of those interested in economic and political affairs demanded from the government the need to approach the principle of transparency in facing the crisis, instead of evading responsibility.
A number of recognized institutions, through their economic experts, called for the need to approach Article 4 of the Freedom of Prices and Competition Law, with a strict ban on corrupt practices, after the deterioration of the purchasing power of Moroccans.
A number of those interested in political and economic affairs called for discussing the most effective ways to devise agricultural schemes that would make Morocco achieve food sovereignty in the future, in addition to supporting poor families and vulnerable groups, especially since the government failed to tighten the screws on brokers and intermediaries.
The parliamentary opposition has repeatedly proposed granting the consumer the right to information, by informing Moroccans of any price increases a full week before approving them, while monitoring the prices of products, goods and services in the markets and limiting their rise.
According to a news note of the High Commission for Planning, the Moroccan household confidence index declined significantly during the second quarter of the year 2023, in light of the unemployment and inflation crisis.
In its report, the delegate confirmed that the results of the circumstantial research of families showed that the household confidence index moved to 45.4 points, instead of the 46.3 points recorded during the previous quarter.
The High Commission for Planning added that the rate of households reporting a deterioration in the standard of living during the past months amounted to 87.3 percent. While 10 percent of them expressed stability, and 2.7 percent expressed improvement.
According to the latest reports, Moroccan families expected the standard of living to continue to deteriorate by 53.4 percent, and 36.9 percent to stabilize it, while 9.7 percent expected an improvement in the standard of living.
According to the official data of the delegate, 53.4 percent of families, during the second quarter of 2023, could cover their expenses through their incomes, while 44 percent of their savings were depleted or resorted to borrowing.
The delegate also highlighted that the rate of households that were able to save part of their income is 2.6 percent, in light of the increases in most consumer items.
