Germany national football team coach Julian Nagelsmann renewed his contract as head of the technical staff of Die Mannschaft until the 2026 World Cup scheduled for the United States, Canada and Mexico, as the German Football Association announced on Friday, putting an end to rumors that spoke of the possibility of returning to coaching one of the clubs.
Nagelsmann, who took over as coach of the German national team six months after he was suddenly dismissed from coaching Bayern Munich in March 2023, said: “It is a decision that comes from the heart. It is a great pride to supervise the national team.”
The 36-year-old young coach, whose contract was set to expire after the European Cup scheduled to be held in Germany from June 14 to September 14 next, added, “We hope to achieve success in the European Cup, which we are eagerly awaiting thanks to a group of the best players in the country. After that, “My technical team and I will face the challenge of the World Cup.”
On the other hand, the German Federation also renewed the contract of sporting director Rudi Föller until the 2026 World Cup.
German Federation President Bernd Neuendorf said that Nagelsmann’s decision to continue with the national team was a “strong message,” while German Football Association sporting director Rudi Föller considered that the latter was “completely convinced” of the necessity of Nagelsmann to continue beyond the European Cup.
Nagelsmann took over the job of coaching the national team last September, and the results began to improve as of last March during the international window with two remarkable victories over France 2-0 and the Netherlands 2-1 in a friendly match after he renewed the national team’s blood, in addition to calling up influential midfielder Toni Kroos.
The German team will open its campaign in the continental finals by facing Scotland in Munich on June 14 in the first group competitions, which also includes Switzerland and Hungary.
Nagelsmann’s name has been associated with many clubs recently, to the point that the new Bayern Munich board of directors entered into negotiations with his business manager to return to supervising the Bavarian club.
The German national team has not won the continental title since its coronation in 1996, and it also exited the last two World Cups in the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in the first round.
