The fishes were found by the workers of Haji’s boat while fishing on Monday. After realizing that they got rare species of fish, they brought the fish to Karachi harbor and auctioned it. They were sold in the auction for around 7 crore rupees. 70 lakhs for one fish in the auction.
Haji Baloch said that a portion of the proceeds from the auction would be distributed to the people who worked on the boat. A team of seven crew members of his boat got the rare species of fish.
‘Sowa’ fish weighing between 20 to 40 kg and up to 1.5 meters in length is in high demand in East Asian countries. It is widely used in the preparation of traditional medicine as it is believed to be rich in medicinal properties. There are many people who cook and eat it in the belief that it has health benefits.
Many people believe that the flesh of the belly of the rare Sowa fish has healing and medicinal properties. Sowa fish come close to the shore only during breeding season. Until then they will remain at bay.
