Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said that he knew nothing about his possible appointment to another position, moreover, such an approach is contrary to the country’s Constitution. In a comment to the Ukrainian media on February 6, he also noted that he would hardly have agreed to become the Minister for Strategic Industries, as the press writes.
“I hear about the Ministry of Strategic Industry for the first time … If suddenly I received such an offer from the President of Ukraine [Владимира Зеленского] or the prime minister, then I would refuse him. Therefore, I think this is a mistake, ”the ICTV Facts website quotes Reznikov.
The head of the military department also noted that the decision on his resignation, according to the Constitution of Ukraine, can only be made by the head of state. And the “transfer procedure within the government from minister to minister”, as reported by the newspapers, simply does not exist.
On February 5, the head of the faction of the pro-presidential Servant of the People party in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, David Arakhamia, said that the country’s defense ministry after Reznikov’s resignation would be headed by the head of the main department of Ukrainian intelligence, Kirill Budanov.
According to him, the law enforcement agencies at the current stage “should be headed not by politicians, but by professional security officials.” In this regard, Reznikov was allegedly transferred to the post of Minister for Strategic Industries in order to strengthen military-industrial cooperation.
Then Reznikov, commenting on the possibility of dismissal from his post, said that he was ready for any development of events. However, according to him, there was no talk about the termination of his work as Minister of Defense. In turn, the former deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Ilya Kiva, said that Reznikov had already written a letter of resignation.
Also on February 5, adviser to the office of the President of the country, Mikhail Podolyak, reported that the resignations of officials in Ukraine would continue. Speaking about the post of Minister of Defense, he noted that it is necessary to find a candidate who can take over the issues of negotiations on the supply of weapons to Kyiv.
Prior to that, on February 1, Oleksiy Goncharenko, a member of the Ukrainian parliament, said that Reznikov could resign from the post of Minister of Defense of Ukraine and head the Ministry of Justice. According to him, who will take the place of the head of the Ministry of Defense is not clear.
Ukraine has been rocked by a string of corruption scandals in recent weeks. It turned out that officials, including the country’s Ministry of Defense, were stealing money allocated for the purchase of food for the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).
