In Spain there are surprising places that are even reminiscent of other countries and paradisiacal destinations such as Iceland or Croatia. Although many of them are not as well known by tourists, as is the case of the Alicante town of Callosa d’Ensarrià, with 7,300 inhabitants.
Located near the Sierra de Bernia, where the impressive Fonts d’Algar, natural pools with crystalline water cascades, are located, it is also a municipality with an important heritage.
Both its walls and its castle, dating from the 18th century, were declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2005. Visitors are also recommended to visit the Poador de la Font Major laundry, built in 1786, and the Archpriestal Church of San Juan Bautista , which dates from the 16th century, but which has undergone modifications well into the 20th century.
However, as they point out on the Valencian Community website, its main attraction is its natural pools and the active tourism that it allows in the Sierra de Bernia area. “This series of natural pools adds to the charm of the roar of the water in the waterfalls, such as that of El Toll de la Caldera, which falls into incredibly blue waters,” they detail on the web.
The hiking trails in the area are also suitable for the youngest members of the family, “since some of the pools are shallow and you can get there through a short route full of entertainment and landscapes carved in limestone” .
This spot, whose hiking trails are located 3km from the town and 15km from Benidorm, has been called a Protected Wet Zone by Agreement of the Valencian Government in 2002.
“They constitute a natural area with a high degree of conservation of ecological wealth and endowed, at the same time, with tourist services and environmental education,” they indicate on the website of the city council.
