Russia managed to draw attention to the need for a thorough and transparent investigation into the sabotage at Nord Stream, but Moscow also saw a reluctance to focus on this issue. This was stated on Wednesday, February 22, by the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the results of the meeting of the UN Security Council on explosions on gas pipelines.
On the one hand, it was possible to draw attention to the need for a thorough investigation in order to really confirm those suspicions about who could be behind this sabotage. <...> But on the other hand, we see a blank wall of unwillingness to do this from the countries of the collective West and, on the contrary, a desire not to focus too much on this issue and gradually make the topic disappear into the sand. We will continue to work to prevent them from doing this,” Peskov told reporters.
Peskov noted that Russia is limited in its ability to conduct investigations, because we are talking about the territorial waters of those states that do not contribute to the search for the truth and those who are guilty of this terrorist attack.
“We regard this as a very negative manifestation. Russia will continue to do everything possible, but I repeat, we are limited in this, ”he said.
The meeting of the UN Security Council on the explosions at the Nord Stream, requested by Russia, took place on February 21. At the event, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebezia called for an independent investigation. He also added that the countries that were behind the explosion should compensate for the damage. The organization’s deputy secretary general, Rosemary DiCarlo, said in response that the UN could not confirm or verify the sabotage allegations, as it awaited the results of national investigations.
