Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asked Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov to remain in his post. Reznikov himself stated this on February 15 to the Reuters agency.
“Yes, this is my president’s decision,” he said.
In recent weeks, Ukraine has been rocked by a string of corruption scandals following a media report in January that officials, including the country’s Defense Ministry, were stealing money allocated to buy food for the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU).
At the end of January, the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence summoned the leadership of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense to a meeting after reports in the media about food purchases for the Ukrainian army at inflated prices.
On February 1, Oleksiy Goncharenko, a member of the Ukrainian parliament, said that Reznikov could leave the post of Minister of Defense of Ukraine and head the Ministry of Justice. According to him, who will take the place of the head of the Ministry of Defense is unclear.
Later, on February 6, former deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ilya Kiva said, citing sources, that Reznikov had already written a letter of resignation.
The head of the Servant of the People faction in the Verkhovna Rada, David Arakhamia, said that the country’s defense ministry after Reznikov’s resignation will be headed by the head of the main department of Ukrainian intelligence, Kirill Budanov. According to him, the current situation “dictates personnel policy.”
On the same day, Reznikov commented on the possibility of dismissal from his post, saying that he was ready for any development of events. However, according to him, there was no talk about the termination of his work as Minister of Defense.
