There are few things that we find embedded in a wall in the street, perhaps a nail, chewing gum or a ring that was used to tie cattle, however, encountering a USB connector certainly draws a lot of attention.
It is quite likely that you have never come across this situation, however, for several years several pen drives have been detected embedded in the walls from various cities around the world, also in Spain.
It is important to remember that It is never advisable to plug a device into a USB whose origin we do not know, mainly because some type of malware or virus can hide in it.
However, it could also be the project ‘Dead Drops’ by digital artist Aram Bartholl who since 2010 has been embedding pen drives in walls around the worldeither. As he explains, this action serves to create “an anonymous offline file-sharing network in public spaces” to which everyone can access and participate with the aim of sharing their files or information that is relevant to the world.
The name of the project, ‘Dead Dropd’ refers to the way in which spies secretly shared informationfor example, by leaving a book with a double bottom on a park bench for someone else to pick up.
At the moment there are more than 2,000 pen drives embedded in walls around the worldonly in Spain there are around 74, which you can find their location on the map offered by the official website of the project.
And it is that anyone can participate and add their own USB port to a wall in your neighborhood, you just have to follow the rules and instructions that mark, for example, that the file has to be a readme.txt file (readme.txt) and then send information such as the location or photos of the surroundings, the exact place where it is and another image of the embedded pen drive itself.
In the event that you discover one close to you, you just have to go with your device that has a USB input and connect it to discover the information it hides, yes, If you don’t have a good antivirus, the experience may be more traumatic than entertaining.
