On Monday, media reports revealed that the Spanish judiciary had asked Luis Enrique and Ernesto Valverde, former Barcelona coaches, to testify in the Negrera case, in which the Catalan club was accused of corruption, breach of trust and falsifying commercial records.
The case relates to alleged payments made by Barcelona to Negrera, the former vice-president of the technical arbitration committee, to provide the club with advice and oral advice on referee-related topics.
According to El Pais, Enrique and Valverde will have to testify in the case, and both must clarify whether they were aware of the allegations.
Valverde, the former coach of Barcelona between 2017 and 2020, publicly stated about the issue, saying: I had no idea about this.
Valverde won the Spanish League twice with the Catalan club, in addition to the King’s Cup and the Spanish Super Cup.
While Luis Enrique coached Barcelona from 2014 to 2017, he won the European Champions League in addition to the Club World Cup and the Spanish League “twice” and three times the King’s Cup with a copy for each of the Spanish and European Super Cups.
