Manchester United, the 14th-placed club in the English Premier League, announced yesterday that it had signed Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim, to succeed Dutchman Erik Ten Hag, who was dismissed from his position on Monday, due to disappointing results.
“It has been done,” United said in a statement on its official website. Welcome to Manchester United, Ruben Amorim,” noting that the 39-year-old coach, who won two Portuguese league titles with Sporting Lisbon in 2021 and 2024, will assume his duties on November 11.
He added, “He will join (the club) until June 2027, and the club has the option to extend for an additional year, once he fulfills his obligations to his current club.”
United described Amorim as “one of the most exciting and highest-rated young coaches in European football.”
The former Dutch international striker for the Red Devils club, Ruud van Nistelrooy, will continue to take charge of coaching the team temporarily until Amorim arrives at Old Trafford.
United sacked Ten Hag on Monday, after their 2-1 defeat to West Ham United, which led to their decline to 14th place with only three wins from nine matches.
His assistant and compatriot Van Nistelrooy was appointed as his temporary successor, and he led the team to victory over Leicester City 5-2 on Wednesday, in the 16th round of the League Cup competition.
