Madrid (EFE).- The tests carried out on the patient isolated since yesterday at the Donostia de San Sebastián Hospital with symptoms compatible with hemorrhagic fever have finally been positive for malaria, with which specific treatment for this disease will now begin.
The result of the analyzes carried out by the National Center for Microbiology, dependent on the Carlos III Health Institute, have ruled out the possibility that the woman had contracted Ebola, dengue, lassa, Crimean Congo, yellow fever and other diarrheal fevers, they have informed EFE sources of this department.
Finally, the tests have been positive for malaria, so treatment will now begin.
The patient, who had recently returned from a trip to the Central African Republic, was transferred yesterday from the Biscayan town of Urduliz to the Donostia Hospital with symptoms compatible with hemorrhagic fever.
After that, she was isolated in the High Biological Safety Unit of the Donostia University Hospital, which immediately activated the protocol provided for this type of disease.
This center in San Sebastián is one of the seven Spanish hospitals that have a unit with special high-security and isolation resources for the treatment of this type of illness.
