Fate was not very kind to Iga Świątek, who will face Sofia Kenin in the first round of the Australian Open. The American showed good form during the preparation period for the new season, defeating, among others, Aryna Sabalenka. It will also be a rematch of the 2020 Roland Garros final. The Pole then won the match 6:4, 6:1 and won her first Grand Slam title.
It won’t be any easier in a potential second round. Danielle Collins or Angelique Kerber might be waiting there. A few days ago, the Raszyn native competed with a German with Polish roots in the United Cup final. Then the Ladies played a fierce part in the first phase of the match, but… later, the 22-year-old dominated her opponent and won 6:3, 6:0. In the case of the American, our player has found her way in recent matches, but it must be remembered that during the Australian Slam semi-final two years ago, Collins turned out to be better, winning in two sets.
Luck was not on our side in the next rounds either. In the fourth round, Świątek may play against Elina Svitolina, and possibly against Jelena Ostapenko in the quarterfinals. In the semi-finals, there may be a fight with Jelena Rybakina or Jessica Pegula, and the potential final is a fight with Aryna Sabalenka or Coco Gauff.
A huge challenge awaits Świątek and Linette. Demanding opponents already in the first round
Magda Linette, who will defend her points from last year’s semi-final in Melbourne, also she faced a very difficult opponent in the inaugural clash. The Poznań native will play against Caroline Wozniacki. The Dane with Polish roots showed after her return that she can still play at a high level. Magdalena Fręch was a bit more luckywho will face Australian – Daria Saville.
In the first round The ladies will also have hit fights without the participation of our players: Camila Giorgi – Victoria Azarenka, Jelena Rybakina – Karolina Pliskova and Caroline Garcia – Naomi Osaka.
Hubert Hurkacz still has to wait for his opponent in the first round. The Wroclaw native will face his opponent from the qualifiers, which are still ongoing. In possibly later stages of the tournament, the Pole may encounter demanding players. He will potentially face Denis Shapovalov in the second round, and Ugo Humbert or Zhizhen Zhang in the third round. A potential match of the 1/8 finals (it would equalize the result achieved last year) is a duel with Holger Rune.
The men’s team also has some very interesting clashes ahead of them in the first round: Matteo Berrettini – Stefanos Tsitsipas, Felix Auger-Aliassime – Dominic Thiem and Carlos Alcaraz – Richard Gasquet.
