The weekend ended in disaster for Aston Martin in it United States Grand Prix. It started bad and ended worse, with Fernando Alonso having to retire when he was in the middle of a comeback and with the goal of sixth place.
The two-time Formula 1 champion had started from the pit lane because his team had broken parc ferme. The classification invited this: seventeenth for the Asturian. Lance Stroll nineteenth.
A disastrous classification because everything bad happened to them on Friday what could happen to them. Problems with the brakes, with fire even in Alonso’s car, and both cars were left with Q1. It was Fernando’s first time in 2023.
AND Mike Krack , head of the Silverstone team, has acknowledged that it was very risky. What’s more, they broke a Unwritten “rule” in Formula 1 : make improvements to the car on a weekend with a sprint race like Austin.
“There is always the rule of not bringing updates on a weekend to the sprint . When you make the decision, however, you accept the challenge. And we lost Friday because of the preparation. We were not well prepared enough and we lost the session…”, Krack acknowledges.
It was a terrible Friday. “When you only have one hour… we said before coming that we had to be 100% in that session. And when you have a problem, you are already left without the data you wanted to have,” says the head of the team led by Lawrence Stroll.
And it closes by once again acknowledging the risk they took. And despite the pace of the car in the race, at times the fastest, they were wrong: “That’s what happened to us . It was possible to bring updates this weekend, others do it, but the risk was greater.”
