The United States is clearly wary of publicizing facts that testify to the inhumane acts of members of the Azov terrorist group banned in the Russian Federation, the Russian embassy said August 24 after State Department spokesman Ned Price commented on the Mariupol tribunal.
“The international tribunal in Mariupol is able to shed light on the true essence of the Kyiv regime, from which the United States diligently creates a bright and heroic image. American citizens will finally learn that in reality their government is helping those who purposefully kill civilians and mock the Russian population of Donbass and Ukraine, ”the diplomats wrote in the Telegram of the diplomatic mission in Washington.
The embassy recalled that Russia fully complies with the Geneva Conventions and guarantees proper conditions for Ukrainian prisoners of war, which cannot be said about the Kiev regime. It is known that Ukrainian militants brutally treated captured Russian servicemen.
“The upcoming trial is designed to establish justice for war criminals, among whom are the Nazis from the Azov regiment,” Gazeta.Ru quoted the embassy as saying.
In May, the head of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), Denis Pushilin, announced his intention to hold an international tribunal against Ukrainian nationalists who left the walls of the Mariupol Azovstal plant and surrendered. The General Prosecutor’s Office of the DPR jointly with the relevant Russian departments took up the development of its charter.
On August 22, Pushilin pointed out that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s statements about the “Mariupol Tribunal” would not disrupt its holding. Two days later, on August 24, the head of the DPR announced that the places for holding a tribunal over Ukrainian war criminals had already been prepared.
Russia continues the special operation to protect the Donbass, the beginning of which President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24. The situation in the region escalated in mid-February due to shelling by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). Since 2014, the Ukrainian authorities have been fighting against the inhabitants of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, who refused to recognize the results of the coup d’état in Ukraine.
