On the night of July 29, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) attacked a pre-trial detention center with Ukrainian prisoners of war near the village of Yelenovka in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) using the American HIMARS multiple launch rocket system. Among the prisoners in the detention center were members of the nationalist group “Azov” (criminal cases have been initiated against the radical formation in the Russian Federation).
Consequences of the impact
According to an Izvestia correspondent, fragments of ammunition from the HIMARS supplied to Kyiv were found at the site of the shelling. Parts of the rooms have been preserved on some of the wreckage.
The very same building of the pre-trial detention center is almost completely destroyed: the roof is destroyed, around – ashes and soot. The bodies of Ukrainian prisoners of war who died as a result of the strike are lying on the spot.
According to the latest data, as a result of the strike, 53 people were killed and another 75 were injured. According to the latest data, as a result of the strike, 53 people were killed and another 75 were injured.
The reaction of the Russian side
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation called the shelling a purposeful bloody provocation by the Kyiv regime. According to the official representative of the department, Igor Konashenkov, the provocation was committed to intimidate the military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and prevent their surrender.
The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation opened a criminal case on the use of prohibited means.
Reasons for the shelling of the colony in Yelenovka
The head of the DPR, Denis Pushilin, called the attack by the Armed Forces of Ukraine a provocation, the purpose of which is to destroy the prisoners before they begin to testify.
“Obviously, this is a deliberate shelling and a desire to destroy those representatives, in particular Azov, who began to testify,” he said.
In turn, military expert Viktor Litovkin told Izvestiya that the Armed Forces of Ukraine attacked the colony because the Ukrainian prisoners testify against their leadership.
According to Eduard Basurin, a representative of the First Corps of the People’s Militia of the DPR, Kyiv knew that there were Ukrainian prisoners in the colony. He stressed that the Ukrainian authorities went to the use of American HIMARS in order to “shut up the mouth of those military men who began to tell the truth about what was happening.”
On February 24, Russia launched a special operation to protect Donbass. The decision was made against the background of the aggravation of the situation in the region as a result of shelling by the Ukrainian military.
