A video of a professor teaching Darwin’s theory of evolution as part of a course at a government post-graduate college in Bannu is going viral. An apology video was released a week ago. A video of him reading an apology written on a three-page stamp paper went viral. He apologizes to a group of Muslim clerics.
The three-page note read by the professor goes on to say that all scientific and rational ideas that are against Islamic Shariah, including Darwin’s theory of evolution, are false and besides, women are inferior to men.
Professor Ali also said in the apology letter that according to Sharia law, men and women do not accept unnecessary interaction.
Pakistani media The Express Tribune reported that the professor gave a speech on women’s rights in Islam in response to protests against women appearing in public without following traditional Islamic dress codes. After weeks of this, the video of the professor’s apology has been released.
The fundamentalists had come forward with criticism of Professor Ali for spreading immorality and speaking against Islam. They also accused Ali of conducting such classes. However, he replied that he only taught the lessons according to the syllabus.
In the background of these events, great criticism is raised. Rafiullah Khan, a member of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, responded that Professor Ali had made his position clear through social media.
Ali has more than 20,000 followers on social media. Ali has asked those who oppose the teaching of Darwin’s theory to go to court and declare it illegal. Khan told a German media outlet that he said he was teaching it because it was his responsibility and the government was paying for it.

Many prominent people have come forward to condemn the incident. Many responded that the suffocating atmosphere and clerical influence was not confined to a few regions or provinces but spread across Pakistan.
