Sergei Skvortsova 60-year-old Swedish and Russian citizen, began his appearance Monday before a court in Stockholm, after being accused of transmitting Western information and technological products for a decade to Russian military intelligence.
Skvortsov must answer to the accusations of “illegal intelligence activities” against the United States and Sweden, following an investigation by the Swedish police with the help of the American FBI.
The defendant, installed in Sweden with his wife in the 1990s, would have resorted to import-export companies of electronic components that he directed for his espionage activities.
His companies served as a platform for “the Russian military intelligence service GRU and part of the Russian state system,” the prosecutor told the court. Henrik Olin.
According to prosecutors, Skvortsov spied in the United States from January 1, 2013 until his arrest in November 2022, and in Sweden from July 1, 2014, and faces up to four years in prison.
“He is not guilty of any of the charges brought by the prosecutor,” his lawyer told the judges, Ulrika Borg.
The trial should last until September 25, but part of it will take place behind closed doors for reasons of national security.
