UAE athletes strengthened their supremacy in the first Gulf Youth Games, which the country is hosting until May 2.
The UAE strengthened its lead in the tournament with 144 medals at the end of the fifth day (the day before yesterday), with 48 gold, 55 silver, and 41 bronze, thanks to the brilliance of the athletics, chess, and badminton teams.
The UAE volleyball team launched the game’s competitions with a distinguished victory over Oman in three rounds to zero, with the results of the rounds (25-17, 25-20, and 25-14), within the first round of the “volleyball” competitions held in the Al-Nasr Club hall. The same round also witnessed a victory. Bahrain beats Kuwait, three rounds to zero.
With the same result, Saudi Arabia won over Qatar.
In today’s meetings, Bahrain faces Saudi Arabia, Oman faces Qatar, and the UAE faces Kuwait.
At the conclusion of the athletics competitions, which took place at the Dubai Police Officers Club, the UAE national team was crowned champion of the tournament, after winning 36 medals, 12 gold, 13 silver, and 11 bronze.
The Saudi national team came second in the final athletics standings with 17 medals, including seven golds, and Kuwait was third with 22 medals, including five golds. Kholoud Al Dhaheri, a member of the Board of Directors of the National Olympic Committee, praised in a press statement the achievement of the athletics team.
She said that this motivates him to achieve more, especially since the team is about to participate in the Asian Championship at the end of this month, which will be hosted by the UAE.
In the rest of the results, the chess team raised its medal tally to 14, including seven gold, after great brilliance, especially in the individual rapid chess category.
There will be great anticipation for the conclusion of the football competitions, with the third round being held today, at Al Nahyan Stadium at Al Wahda Club in Abu Dhabi, where the national team will meet Kuwait at 16:45, and Oman will meet Bahrain at 20:00.
The Kuwaiti national team has the greatest opportunity to win the title, as it leads with six points, compared to three points for the Emirates and Oman, and Bahrain with no points.
In handball, the team lost in the first round to Oman with a score of (26-30), while Saudi Arabia beat Bahrain with a score of (32-29), and Kuwait beat Qatar (27-20).
