Today, the competitions of the 28th edition of the Sharjah International Chess Championship will start, which will be held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and organized by the Sharjah Chess and Culture Club.
200 players will participate in the rapid chess competitions, while 180 players will participate in the blitz chess tournament, representing 30 countries, led by the Emirati golden boy Salem Abdul Rahman. Sheikh Saud bin Abdulaziz Al Mualla, Chairman of the Sharjah Club for Culture and Chess, stressed that “the Sharjah International Championship would not have achieved this great history without the great support it received from His Highness, the Ruler of Sharjah, and his constant patronage of it, the club and the players in general.”
He said in a press statement: “The participation of large numbers of international players and professors from inside and outside the country confirms that it has become the focus of attention of the world’s smartest people, and we have become accustomed to the successful organization that suits the club’s status as the largest chess club in the world, which includes the regional office of the International Chess Federation and the headquarters of Arab Chess Federation. The club’s Secretary-General, Jamal Issa Al-Midfa, said, “The championship witnesses a large participation of great international professors from inside and outside the country, as the number of great international professors reached 14 international professors, in addition to six international professors.”
