In late 2023, 42-year-old Golris Gahraman is accused of stealing from clothing stores in Auckland and Wellington. CCTV footage of people trying to steal goods from here has been released. The resignation comes in the wake of the footage going viral on social media and the police launching an investigation.
But Golrais Ghahraman said that his resignation was due to personal stress and psychological trauma. The standard that people expect from those working in the political arena did not come from his side. There were some failures. Ghahraman also admitted to facing mental health issues.
The stress of work affected his character. I am not trying to justify my actions, but I would like to explain them. A mental health professional I see regularly suggests that my recent behavior is the result of extreme stress. “I have let down a lot of people and I am sorry,” the MP said in a statement.
Ghahraman resigned after the allegations of theft in business establishments became strong. Ghahraman, who is of Iranian origin, came to New Zealand as a refugee with his family as a child. Years later he got New Zealand citizenship.
Earlier, Ghahraman was a victim of controversies due to his pro-Palestinian protests. Gahraman, who entered politics in 2017, was New Zealand’s first refugee Member of Parliament and held nine portfolios including Justice, Foreign Affairs, Human Rights, Defence, Refugees and Women.
