New Delhi. Microsoft-owned AI-powered platform GitHub has 13.2 million developers in India. Out of which 3.5 million have joined this platform this year.
Developers in India are the second largest contributors to GitHub generative AI projects globally.
With this sustained and significant growth, GitHub estimates that India will overtake the US in total developer population by 2027.
Sharyn Napier, vice president of APAC at GitHub, said, “India’s growing developer community is at the heart of the country’s position as an innovation powerhouse. It is exciting to see Indian developers making significant contributions to generic AI projects on GitHub, highlighting India’s growing importance in the AI landscape, with the country’s developers directly shaping the future of AI innovation around the world.’ ‘
The 2023 edition of GitHub’s State of the Octoverse report revealed that generative AI is driving a significant and global increase in individual contributors to generative AI projects, with a 148 percent year-over-year increase.
Notably, the US, India and Germany lead among developer communities, while other regions including the UK, Japan, Hong Kong and France follow.
India’s developer community has experienced steady growth year-on-year, including a 36 percent increase in 2023.
India is building its digital public infrastructure with open materials, from software code to AI models, to improve digital payments and ecommerce systems for itself and other countries.
