What you need to know:
This November 20, the decree for the first 7 train routes in Mexico was published. We tell you what they will be.
A few weeks ago, President AMLO told us that he was already preparing a decree to revive passenger trains in Mexico. And that’s it: in the DOF The 7 projected routes were published.
But what does this imply? what is going to change? Here we tell you everything you need to know about it.
The first 7 routes of AMLO’s passenger train project
On the morning of November 8, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced a decree to return passenger train operations in the country.
The idea is that the tracks that are currently used only for freight transportation will also be used by passenger trains. At that time we only knew that the decree was going to come out this November 20 and that’s how it happened.
On the morning of this November 20, the decree was published to declare it as a priority area for national development “lto the provision of public passenger rail transport service in the Mexican Railway System”.
This decree stipulates that on the railways that we will mention in a moment, preference will be given to passenger trains but the freight transport service will also be respected.
Then, public transportation concessionaire companies will be the first invited to present projects for passenger transportation. They have until January 15, 2024 to do so.
If this does not happen, then the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation may assign the job to SEDENA, the Navy or individuals who come to you with a project. Baia, baia, baia…
Now, the first projected routes are the following:
- Train Mexico-Veracruz-Coatzacoalcos
- Ten Interurban AIFA-Pachuca
- Train Mexico-Querétaro-León-Aguascalientes
- Train Manzanillo-Colima-Guadalajara-Irapuato
- Mexico-San Luis Potosí-Monterrey-Nuevo Laredo
- Mexico-Querétaro-Guadalajara-Tepic-Mazatlán-Nogales
- Aguascalientes-Chihuahua-Ciudad Juárez
“We are going to give preference first to those who already have freight train concessions so that, in a reasonable time, they can present us a project”AMLO indicated, and then clarified that it will not just be about throwing out the passenger trains and that’s it. No. The more than 20 thousand kilometers of railways that the country has will also have to be repaired, modernized and electrified. That ““It will help us a lot to face the problem of pollution,” the president said in a press conference.
