On Saturday, the court announced that Imran Khan’s third marriage in 2018 was illegal.
This is the third verdict against Imran Khan in a single week. Before the general elections in Pakistan, the order was issued barring him from contesting in the elections to be held on Thursday.
Imran Khan, 71, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for leaking government secrets. Also, he was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment along with his third wife Bushra Bibi in another case of illegal sale of government gifts.
Now they have been sentenced to seven years imprisonment and a fine of 5 lakh Pakistani rupees each for illegal marriage.
Another marriage without obeying Iddat
Bushra Bibi’s first husband Khawar Maneka filed the complaint. They accused Bushra of violating the Islamic rule of observing a mandatory interval, or iddat, between two marriages. He also complained that both his ex-wife and Imran Khan had an immoral relationship before marriage. This offense is punishable by stoning to death.
Imran Khan tied the knot in a secret ceremony in January 2018, seven months before he became Prime Minister. Both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were present in the court hall when the verdict was announced.
While Imran is in Rawalpindi’s Garrison Nagar Jail, his wife has been allowed to serve her sentence at a hilltop bungalow in Islamabad.
Imran Khan was arrested on August 5 last year after being convicted in the Toshkhana corruption case. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison.
