This Brand Is Popular; Growing Nestlé India With Suresh Narayan

Suresh Narayanan is the Chairman and Managing Director of Nestle India. He is credited with reviving the Maggi noodles brand, which faced public outrage in 2015 after it was found to contain lead, a heavy metal unfit for public consumption. He then took charge of the company’s India business. He faced two challenges. Revitalize the brand, boost employee morale. The first thing to do is to instill confidence in the employees and the thought that this time will pass. After that, the company faced many challenges but had a friend, philosopher and guide in Suresh Narayanan. When Suresh Narayanan took charge, apart from the Maggi crisis, there were many problems. Market penetration was low. The company was behind innovation. He however asked the leadership to think about growth and focus on bringing it forward.

Over the past eight years, the company has made several innovations at the product level, including introducing variants of Maggi. Nestlé also launched products like Oat Flakes, Nescafe Black Roast, Chicken65 Masala Noodles.

While India is not new to him, having worked in the market for two decades before being appointed to manage Nestlé’s operations in Egypt and the Philippines when he took over, he knew that his return would not immediately change the brand.

Born in Bengaluru, Narayanan studied economics at the Delhi School of Economics with the aim of joining the Indian Administrative Service. However, a career turning point came when Hindustan Lever (now Hindustan Unilever or HUL) visited his campus to recruit people. Suresh Narayanan was heading HUL’s beverages division in India when he was appointed Country MD of Nestlé’s Singapore operations after a one-year stint at Colgate-Palmolive in India. Led Nestlé’s operations in Egypt during the 2010 Arab Spring protests.

Nestle India Maggi has come a long way from the past. Still Suresh Narayanan’s expertise in crisis management is often useful. As the business environment remains challenging, he relies heavily on real-time data and analytics to make decisions.

In 2019, the company adopted Project Midas. Under it the company has started to innovate and distribute according to centralized data for each region. Using data crunching through population related data by cities, regions, households, outlets, the company decides on innovation. Under him, the company has also improved its supply chain, the company itself reported. In 2020 he became the highest paid executive in India.

Suresh Narayanan is also a member of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility. Graduated with Masters in Economics from DSE. Later he completed his diploma from IMD program of London Business School. Chairman and CEO of Nestlé Philippines. He joined Nestlé in 1999. He was the Vice President of Sales in India.
