The freight transport logistics operator MEDWAY (will provide the locomotive and the equipment to carry out measurements and data collection) and the Aragonese consulting firms Hiberus Tecnología (will provide technological support) and Switching Consulting (energy consultant with experience in the railway sector with clients such as Renfe or Metro de Madrid, among others), in addition to the Aragón Energy Cluster (CLENAR) and logistics, are behind this project that this year will already have the first version ready to useaccording to sources consulted by the Economist
The main objective of Eco_Ferro is help through a digital platform to decarbonize and reduce the carbon footprint and emissions on the trains. To do this, Industry 4.0 technologies, cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence and machine learning will be used.
This digital platform will allow know precisely and in real time the energy consumption of locomotives during its operation. With the information generated and managed through the platform, railway operators will be able to technically and financially control the energy consumed by a specific locomotive on a given journey.
You can also know the cost difference between using an electric locomotive versus a diesel one, forecasting energy consumption and costs in the short-medium term and measuring the electricity produced in regeneration.
The project also includes the design of a digital tool to integrate energy consumption variables of rail transport, with the costs derived from the pricing of energy markets and its environmental impact.
This system will facilitate the improvement of consumption patternsin addition to stimulating the decarbonization of the system while reducing costs on an ecological and economic level.
The technological solution It is scalable so railway operators from anywhere in the world will be able to apply and develop this platform on their trains.
And, after this first phase of development, we want to undertake a second phase to incorporate improvements and functionalities in the digital platform. This stage could begin as early as late 2024 or early 2025.
The Eco_Ferro project has the support of the Ministry of Industry through aid from the 2023 call to support Innovative Business Groups and with financing from the Next Generation funds of the European Union.
