On the other side of the coin is inscribed in Latin ‘Protestant religion, the laws of England, and the independence of Parliament’. Historians point out that Charles Coin sought to win the favor of those who supported the parliamentary party in the Civil War. It is clear from Coin’s words how much Charles valued Catholicism. The coin belongs to a collection of 220 historical coins that were auctioned on September 22 under the supervision of auctioneer Dixus Noonan Webb. The auctioned coins belong to Michael Giet Selt, a collector of antiquities.
Giat Celt, of German descent, opened an antique shop in Berlin in 1977. These are coins received from here and passed on from mother and grandfather. It is estimated that a total of `4.5 crore will be received for 220 historical coins. Triple Unit is the star of the auction. One of the other notable coins for sale is the 20 shillings, printed in 1656 during the reign of Oliver Cromwell. It is estimated that this coin will fetch at least Rs 20 lakh. A very rare Rebel Money crown issued by the Catholic Confederation of Kilkenny is also up for auction. The price is expected to be around Rs 4 lakh.
What makes the auction attractive is its antiquity and history rather than the price of the coins. The reason for the price jump is the competition of the rich to add such coins, which are limited in number, to their collection. Two identical keychains by French Queen Mary Antoinette will be auctioned off in Geneva on November 9 this year. The keychains contain 112 diamonds. Both chains will be auctioned together. The Indian rupee is expected to be around Rs 29.5 crore. In 2018, the French Queen’s diamond necklace was put up for sale in Geneva for Rs 14 crore. But it was sold for Rs 264 crore.
