Australian Ange Postecoglou, coach of Tottenham Hotspur, admitted that his team still has a long way to go before it can compete for the English Premier League title, but he believes that it will develop out of the current pain it feels. Tottenham suffered its third consecutive defeat in the English Premier League, after losing 0-2 to its host Chelsea, yesterday, in a postponed match from the 26th stage of the competition.
This defeat comes after the London team’s 3-2 loss to its guest and neighbor Arsenal, last Sunday, as well as the 4-0 loss to Newcastle United, in the middle of last month. These disappointing results reduced Tottenham’s hopes of being among the top four in the English Premier League standings, qualifying for the Champions League next season, and raised questions about whether Postecoglou was still on the right track to achieve the club’s long-awaited success.
Before the team’s meeting with its host Liverpool the day after tomorrow in the 36th round of the tournament, Postecoglou said: “We still have a long way to go, but that does not mean that we cannot raise the banner of challenge next season.” The Tottenham coach added, “I think that in terms of the level I want us to provide, we are very far from that, but I do not deny the fact that we have to be able to compete and challenge success every year that I am here.”
