A gas summit will be held in Istanbul on February 14 and 15. This was announced on January 30 by the head of the Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Fatih Donmez.
“On February 14-15, an international summit on our gas hub project is planned to be held in Istanbul,” he said at a press conference.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the possibility of creating a gas hub in Turkey on October 12, 2022. As Andrey Loboda, director of communications at BitRiver, told Izvestia at the time, the success of such a project would make Turkey one of the most important powers in Asia and Europe, both in the economy and in politics. For the Russian Federation, this project is also beneficial, as the country will be able to provide sales markets bypassing the sanctions.
On November 1, Putin called a gas hub in Turkey a realistic project that could be launched quickly. He added that there are always gas buyers, since blue fuel is a very demanded product in the world.
At the end of December, the head of Gazprom, Alexei Miller, announced that Turkey and Russia had begun the practical implementation of the gas hub project on Turkish territory. According to him, it will ensure transparent and fair pricing in the market.
On January 17, the Anadolu agency wrote that Turkey is actively preparing the infrastructure for the start of full-fledged operation of the international gas hub in the country. It was reported that the third floating regasification unit arrived in the Mediterranean.
Later, on January 28, Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Oleg Syromolotov said that Moscow and Ankara had begun discussing delicate issues of gas hub security. He noted the enthusiasm of the Turkish partners, their constructivism and “energy for close joint work.”
