Turkey has registered 78 aftershocks since the Kahramanmaras earthquake. This was announced on Monday, February 6, by Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay.
“There were 78 aftershocks. Three – with a magnitude of more than 6, eight – with a magnitude of more than 5, ”he said on the air of the TRT TV channel.
Oktay emphasized that repeated earthquakes are a great danger for buildings that were damaged as a result of the first strike.
On February 6, EMSC seismologists recorded an earthquake of magnitude 7.7 in Central Turkey. The source lay at a depth of 10 km, the epicenter of the earthquake was located 27 km from the Turkish city of Gaziantep with a population of more than 1 million people.
As a result of natural disaster in ten provinces of Turkey, 284 people were killed, more than 2 thousand people were injured. The earthquake destroyed houses in particular in the provinces of Kahramanmaras, Gaziantep, Diyarbakir, Malatya and Adana. So, the governor of Malatya, Hulusi Shahin, said that 140 buildings collapsed in the city.
The country has declared the highest level of threat, the authorities have asked for international assistance.
An unfavorable situation due to tremors has also developed in Syria. The Al Ekhbariya TV channel reported that the number of victims of the earthquake there rose to 237, and another 639 were injured.
The consulates general in Antalya and Istanbul stated that they had not received requests from Russians in connection with the earthquake.
