Dogu Perincek, leader of the Motherland Party, said that if he wins the presidential elections in Turkey, the country will withdraw from NATO. He spoke about this on Friday, March 24.
“The decision of our party to withdraw from NATO and its rationale are very weighty. According to polls, 80% of Turkish people now consider the United States of America a threat, 70% of the Turkish people consider Russia and China to be friends. Under our rule, Turkey will definitely leave NATO, because NATO poses the only threat to Turkey,” Perincek said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
On January 25, the ruling Justice and Development Party made a statement that Turkey would not give up its membership in the North Atlantic Alliance. The words of those who talk about the withdrawal of Turkey from NATO were considered extremely surprising in the party.
On January 19, the Turkish Rodina party launched an agitation campaign calling on the authorities of the republic to withdraw from the North Atlantic Alliance. It organizes the collection of signatures for relevant petitions, as well as rallies and protests against the deployment of alliance military bases in Turkey.
The first round of presidential elections in Turkey, according to the decree of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, will be held on May 14. The powers of the current Turkish leader expire in June. The second round, if necessary, will be held on May 28.
