After an eight-month investigation by the Broward Sheriff’s Office, two men were arrested for defrauding Uber Eats out of more than $1 million in deliveriesas reported on the CBS portal.
Detectives with the Strategic Investigations Division arrested Trayon Morgan, 21, and Roy Blackwood, 38. Both were charged with racketeering and grand theft.
The men began their fraudulent operation in January 2022 in Broward and Palm Beach counties.
The fraud worked this way: Morgan used the Uber Eats app acting as a customer and delivery person. This was achieved by using a false name as a customer, and then accepting orders from him as a delivery person.
As a delivery man, Uber gave him a preauthorized credit card to make the purchases of the orders.
However, as a customer, Morgan canceled the order. Then he would buy a gift card with the Uber credit card.
Once they had the gift card, Blackwood would take Morgan to different Walgreens stores where they exchanged the gift cards for merchandise.
The men got to go to 27 different stores.
In a single day, they defrauded Uber of more than $5,000.
Morgan used different fake accounts to get more gift cards.
Morgan was able to create several fake Uber accounts using stolen identities of other Uber drivers and altering his own photo.
