For the first time in the region, the UAE will host the Women’s Cricket World Cup T20, organised by the International Cricket Council, in cooperation with the Emirates Cricket Board. The competitions will be held in cooperation with the Dubai Sports Council in Dubai and Sharjah, during the period from October 3 to 20, with the participation of 10 teams.
The details of the event were announced during a press conference held at the Dubai Sports Council headquarters, which was attended by: Geoff Allardyce, CEO of the International Cricket Council, Zayed Abbas, Board Member of the Emirates Cricket Board, and Khalid Al Awar, Director of Communications and Marketing at the Dubai Sports Council.
The tournament will last for 18 days, during which 23 matches will be held. The tournament matches will be divided between Dubai and Sharjah, with the semi-final matches scheduled for October 17 in Dubai and October 18 in Sharjah. The final match will be held in Dubai. The participating teams have been divided into two groups. The first group includes Australia, the six-time world champion, along with India, New Zealand, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, while the second group includes Bangladesh, England, South Africa, the West Indies and Scotland.
Geoff Allardyce praised the UAE for hosting the tournament, saying: “One of the exciting things about the UAE is its diversity. It’s a place where the whole world is represented, which means this is a home World Cup for all ten teams, and the players can enjoy the support of passionate fans. With that in mind, I’m pleased to announce that tickets will be available from just AED 5, with children under 18 going free.”
“We will also work with the Emirates Cricket Board and Dubai Sports Council on the legacy of the event. We will be hosting cricket festivals to give over 500 girls the opportunity to get involved in the game and have a fun first experience of cricket,” he added.
Khalid Al Awar said: “Hosting the tournament by the UAE in general, and Dubai in particular, highlights the distinguished position that Dubai enjoys in the world of sports. Dubai and the UAE continue to affirm their position as one of the most successful countries in the world in their ability to host and organize major international tournaments and the strongest international competitions. Dubai has gained the confidence of the entire world in its ability and potential in this field, until it has become a global model to be emulated in the sports events sector thanks to its possession of a global infrastructure that suits various sports, an integrated work strategy, and successful investment in developing the infrastructure and preparing sports facilities designed according to the highest international standards.”
Zayed Abbas stressed that the Emirates Cricket Board looks forward to working closely with the International Cricket Council and the Bangladesh Cricket Board to make this global event a success. He said: “We have many national talents who have great and rich experience in hosting major international cricket tournaments, and the tournament will witness the best cricketers from all over the world competing for the biggest prize in the T20 format.”
