UAPA was enacted in 1967 to curb illegal activities by individuals or organizations. The purpose of this Act is to provide power to control activities against the unity and sovereignty of the country. Whoever chooses people for terrorist activities, this law will apply to them. A person, if convicted under this Act, is liable to imprisonment for a term not less than 5 years or life imprisonment.

Under the existing law, only CBI officers not below the rank of DSP can file a case.
