Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei, who competed in the Paris Olympics last month, suffered burns to 75 percent of her body after her lover allegedly set her on fire, local media reported.
Kenyan and Ugandan media said the long-distance runner was in critical condition in a hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, after the attack on Sunday evening.
Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah Ole Kusiom told The Star that Daniel Ndima Marangash, the runner’s lover, also suffered burns in the attack, which he described as a domestic dispute.
Cheptegei, who finished 44th in Paris, has a house in Kenya where she stays when she trains.
Police said they were investigating the incident.
