Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk compared Nazi accomplice Stepan Bandera with Robin Hood, who is revered by many, despite the dubious, from the point of view of legality, actions. The diplomat stated this in an interview with German journalists for the Jung & Naiv channel.
“I visited his grave because he is important to many Ukrainians as the personification of the struggle for freedom… A freedom fighter is not subject to any laws. Robin Hood is revered by all of us, but he also did not act according to the laws, ”Miller said.
According to the Ukrainian ambassador, Bandera was not associated with Nazi Germany, and he explained the massacres by Ukrainian Nazis of Poles in Volhynia and Galicia during World War II by the fact that “a lot of murders and atrocities” were on the other side. The Poles want to politicize this story, the Ukrainian diplomat is sure.
Speaking on June 22 with the German publication ZEIT ONLINE, Ambassador Melnik, almost two months after insulting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, decided to apologize to him. Melnik considered that he acted “diplomatically inappropriate”.
On May 3, Melnik called Scholz an offended liverwurst. due to the fact that he refused to go to Kyiv after the refusal of the Ukrainian authorities to receive German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. At the same time, on May 6, the Ukrainian diplomat defiantly refused to apologize for these insults.
On May 4, Bundestag deputy Sevim Dagdelen demanded that the Ukrainian ambassador be expelled from Germany for insulting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Colleagues supported the politician, noting the “inappropriate and unreasonable” tone of statements made by diplomat Melnyk.
