A large number of people have come out on the streets against toxic waste and the police had to resort to lathicharge to control the unruly public. According to the information, people from many organizations are among the protesters. People are demanding that arrangements for disposal of this waste should be shifted from Pithampur to somewhere else.
This poisonous waste (Union Carbide) will be destroyed in Pithampur in the next 180 days. Opponents say that burning Union Carbide’s chemical waste will harm the environment and land. On Thursday also, different organizations had demonstrated against garbage in Inder. Pithampur bandh has been called on Friday. The call of social organizations has also been supported by the state’s main opposition party Congress.
On the other hand, CM Mohan Yadav said that the people of Bhopal have been living with this waste for the last 40 years. Many organizations of the Government of India have been involved in the disposal of this poisonous waste (Union Carbide). Earlier in 2015, 10 metric tonnes of waste was burnt in Pithampur as a trial and its report prepared in the presence of scientists was presented in the Supreme Court. The report revealed that disposal of hazardous waste has no impact on the environment. After detailed analysis of the report, Madhya Pradesh High Court had given instructions to burn the remaining hazardous waste.
