The US House of Representatives approved the bill for new aid of 300 million dollars for Ukraine, reports Anadolu.
The House of Representatives approved the bill which became a new bill separating from the budget of the Department of Defense (Pentagon) and which provides 300 million dollars for Ukraine.
The draft law was approved with 311 votes “for” and 117 votes “against”. The inclusion of aid to Ukraine in the Pentagon’s 2024 budget caused tensions between Republicans and Democrats.
– The Pentagon and State Department budgets were also approved
The Pentagon’s budget of 826 billion dollars was also approved in the House of Representatives.
But this approval is said to not prevent a possible shutdown in the country. The House of Representatives also approved the State Department budget.
The US government is facing the risk of a shutdown due to the budget dispute between Republicans and Democrats.
– What does a “federal government shutdown” mean?
Under US law, if Congress fails to pass a budget for the entire fiscal year, which begins on October 1 and ends on September 30 of each year, the period until that happens must be covered by interim budgets.
The federal government, which loses spending authority in periods when the interim budget is not approved, is forced to suspend all activities except for vital services.
In this process public sector workers in non-essential services are sent on compulsory leave while public sector workers such as the US military, intelligence agencies, doctors and nurses in public hospitals and security workers in airports and prisons continue their duties. These employees who fall under the category of “vital personnel” during the shutdown period do not receive their salaries until Congress approves a new budget.
