A United States warship shot down a drone and a ballistic missile in the Red Sea this Thursday (28) by Yemen’s Huthi rebels, supported by Iran, the American Army announced.
You Huthis have repeatedly attacked ships in the vital Red Sea shipping route in support of Palestinians in Gaza, where Israel is fighting the Hamas group.
“The USS Mason [DDG 87] downed a drone and a ballistic missile launched by the Huthis in the southern Red Sea,” reported Centcom (United States Central Command). “There was no damage to any of the 18 ships in the area, and there were no reports of injuries.”
According to Central Command, this was the 22nd attempted attack on international shipping by the Huthis since mid-October. The attacks threaten a route through which up to 12% of world trade passes, prompting Washington to create a multinational naval force to protect shipping in the Red Sea.
The Huthis say they attack Israel and ships linked to that country to press for an end to the offensive in the Gaza Strip.
